The Martingale Betting Strategy

The Martingale betting strategy was founded by a renowned mathematician, Paul Pierre Levy, in the 18th century. As one of the oldest and most popular strategies, the martingale betting strategy requires you to double down on your bet every time you win and revert to your initial bet whenever you lose. Here’s an example of how the Martingale betting strategy works.

  • Bankroll – $100
  • Bet stakes – $10
  • Initial bet amount – $10

According to the Martingale strategy, you must place an initial bet of $10 on any even money bet, those with a 50-50 chance of happening. Even money bets include black/red, even/odd, and the Hi/Lo (1-18/19-36).

If your bet loses, you are required to maintain the $10 as your next bet. If your bet wins, the martingale betting strategy dictates you double your bet to $20. If this bet wins again, you will have to wager $$40 as your next bet. If this wins, you must wager $80 as your next bet. However, if this bet loses, you must revert to the initial $10 bet.

Advantages of the Martingale Betting Strategy

If you are on a short winning streak, this roulette strategy can be pretty effective. You can quickly grow your small bankroll. Additionally, it’s relatively easy to implement. Whether you are new to roulette or an expert, the martingale betting strategy is easy to execute.

When you do the mathematics behind this strategy, once you win, you’ll realize that you’ve recouped all the money lost plus a profit equivalent to your initial bet. In this case, your profit will be $10.

Disadvantages of the Martingale Betting Strategy

Because you are doubling your bets with every win, it is quite easy to go broke while using the martingale roulette strategy. This is especially true if you find yourself on a losing streak. Additionally, this strategy works best with even money bets and not any other roulette bet.

D’Alembert Roulette Strategy

If you see the martingale roulette strategy as too risky, you should consider using the D’Alembert. Many people view the D’Alembert roulette strategy as a safe option since it dictates you increase or decrease your bet by one unit instead of doubling down. Here’s a quick breakdown of D’Alembert roulette strategy in action with a unit bet of $10. You can use any amount as your unit bet: $1, $2, $3, $50, $100, or more.

  • Your initial bet is $10. The outcome is a loss. So you have -$10 on your balance sheet
  • Your second bet is $20 since you increase it by a unit. You lose. So you have a $-20 deficit and a -$30 net profit.
  • Your third bet is $30. The result is a loss. Net profit is -$60
  • The fourth bet is $40. The result is a win. Net profit is -$20
  • The fifth bet is $30. The result is a win. Net profit is $10

The Advantages and Disadvantages of the D’Alembert Roulette Strategy

The biggest advantage of using the D’Alembert roulette strategy is that you control your budget more since you only increase or decrease your bet amount with a unit instead of doubling up. While this is a good thing, it has the disadvantage of limiting the amount you can win during gameplay. You can only win a small amount of money as profit.

A Strategy Is Not a Sure Way to Win!

Like many other online casino games, online roulette uses Random Number Generators (RNGs) to determine the game’s outcome. The RNG generates millions of game results per spin, with each spin corresponding to an outcome. So, when you hit the spin button, one of these results is randomly picked to correspond to a game’s outcome.

With this in mind, it’s crucial to remember that there’s no guarantee of winning every time you spin the roulette wheel. Even with a proper strategy executed to the tee, the house edge limits your chance of winning.
