4 Things Freshers Must Consider During Job Hunts!

Job Hunts

If you’re fresh out of school or university and you’re hunting for jobs in Australia, you might be worried.

As of May 2024, the job vacancies in Australia have decreased by 2.7% from the previous quarter. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t get a job of your preference!

In Australia, there’s a perfect job for every fresher, irrespective of your degree. But if you want to bag your dream job during job hunts, you have to consider some key tips and tricks. Want to know what they are? Keep reading!

1. Display key traits

Yes, getting a good job depends largely on your technical knowledge, but a key factor is your soft skills. As a fresher, the recruiter might not expect you to have excellent industry knowledge, but if there’s one thing they’ll expect, it’s how you conduct yourself. So here are some key skills you must display during the interview:

a)    Eagerness to learn

This is probably the most important soft skill that you should display throughout the interview.

If any recruiter sees that a fresher is willing to learn about their work, much more than the interest shown by their peers, they will automatically have a great impression of you.

Talk about your creative pursuits and how you kept learning and improving yourself in both academics and extracurricular activities.

b)    Ability to take accountability

This tip applies to freshers who have short resumes or resume pointers that might not be considered very relevant to the job.

Here, you can impress the interviewer by showing that you don’t shy away from responsibilities and believe in taking ownership of your work, even if it means you’ll be blamed for your errors.

Every employer will appreciate an employee who knows how to own up to their mistakes and correct themselves.

c)    Being a team player

Another valued skill in candidates is the ability to be a team player or cooperate with everyone in their team.

As a fresher, you can highlight college projects where you and your peers had to reach a common conclusion, even though there might have been misunderstandings.

In today’s world, it has become especially important to show your recruiter that you know how to put your viewpoints forward without disregarding others.

d)     Knowing how to multitask

Multitasking has become important in today’s world because no job profile is limited to only one kind of work. Freshers, especially, might be asked to work on different projects and do various kinds of things all at once to prove their competency.

If you’re naturally good at multitasking, it’ll be great for you. But if you aren’t, then try to highlight small activities that you’ve multitasked, such as balancing academics and sports.

2. Contact a recruitment agency

One of the best solutions for job hunting is to seek a reliable recruitment agency. They will train you to become the sharpest candidate in the waiting room!

However, it’s important to know which agency will deliver on its promise. Read Google reviews or get in touch with someone you know for further information.

Typically, a reputed agency will conduct mock assessments, personal interviews, and case studies to check your progress. They may also give you booklets or videos to improve any particular area you might be weak at.

3. Prepare a strong resume

Another thing to keep in mind is to strengthen your resume as much as possible. Fill it with relevant pointers and keywords, highlighting your achievements and skill areas.

Remember, many recruiters use a system called Applicant Tracking Software (ATS), which filters candidates based on certain keywords.

For example, if you’re applying for a job that has mentioned that it needs candidates with skills in Microsoft Office, make sure your resume contains the phrase “Microsoft Office.”

While it might mean more work and more effort in customising your resumes for different companies, the chances of being shortlisted significantly increase.

4. Keep networking

You might already have heard of LinkedIn or similar job-searching platforms. Most freshers mindlessly send out invites or email their applications without knowing how to master these platforms.

Before you start hunting for jobs online, remember to have a strong network. This applies to networking both online and offline. You need strong recommenders to back your resume and write valid letters of recommendation.

Carefully go through LinkedIn, Yellow Pages, and Google to look up relevant keywords. Build a relationship with potential recruiters before jumping right in with vacancies.

Conclusion

These are only a few of the many tips and tricks that freshers should remember before job hunting. However, the most important tip is to never lose faith in your abilities.

Remember, facing rejections is a part of the entire game in job hunts, and with consistent improvement, you’ll definitely bag your dream job!
